Even though Porter Ranch has limited access to amenities, it features a plethora of large parks ideal for families who enjoy spending time in and viewing the surrounding mountains. These parks include Moonshine Canyon Park, Palisades Park, Browns Creek Canyon, Stoney Point Park, and Aliso Canyon Park. Porter Ranch was once known for having some of the cleanest air in the Valley – attributable to the winds that regularly sweep through the community. However, after the major gas blowout in the Aliso Canyon natural gas storage facility – one of the largest facilities of its kind in the United States, that was only recently fixed in February, 2016, many residents had to be evacuated from their homes and reported illnesses caused by the chemicals released into the area. As of March, 2016, homes in Porter Ranch were still testing positive for the presence of heavy metals and other toxic chemicals. The community is recovering, but many residents have decided to not return to the area.
