San Gabriel, California
San Gabriel is a city of about 40,000 people. It was the first township of Los Angeles County, and was incorporated as a city in 1913. Downtown Los Angeles, Pasadena, San Marino, and South Pasadena are all nearby.
San Gabriel has its own police and fire departments. The San Gabriel Unified School District, which has been ranked as one of the top schools in California, serves most of the city of San Gabriel (see Boundary Map). And, the Garvey School District serves the remainder of the city (see Garvey School District Map).
The city is centered around the Mission District, named for the Mission San Gabriel Arcángel, founded in 1771 by Father Junípero Serra. The Mission District is full of historic properties, and includes City Hall, the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse, restaurants, and shops. You can take a guided Historical Walk, to learn about the city's history first-hand.
San Gabriel Square is a bustling outdoor shopping center offering a wide variety of Asian shops, cuisine, and tea houses, a great place to visit if you are looking for an authentic taste of China.
